There are good reasons why Union BJP Prime Minister Narendra Modi protected Pinarayi Vijayan who committed big anti-national economic crimes and hunted former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram

The people of India are watching with contempt the Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan who is still involved in corruption and smuggling through airports like Kannur as before and now continuing rampant drug trade and trafficking also through the ranks of his Marxist Party that has been reduced now to a regional party being protected without even a single case by the central BJP Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but along with the leaders of the regional opposition parties in India like the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, the Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi and the Dravidian progressive party in Tamil Nadu named the Dravida Munnetta Kazhakam-DMK- Mr. Palaniyappan Chidambaram, the leader of the national and the oldest-standing party in India the Indian National Congress who has been four times the Union Finance Minister and the Union Home Minister and who is still a Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha being hunted through the Central Investigation Agencies by taking cases, threatening with cases, arresting and imprisoning by the Bharatiya Janata Party ever since they came to power. The people are watching this chase going on in the name of personal vendetta and political retaliation.

The one thing here that confuses us is the stark differences that will shock anyone between Pinarayi Vijayan who is protected by the central BJP in many anti-national crimes including smuggling and total vanishing of foreign aid, and Chidambaram who is being hunted continuously by them since they came to power saying he has serious financial crimes against him. Chidambaram is a senior lawyer in the Supreme Court of India, highly educated and has held many positions as a Member of Parliament, including that of the Union Minister of Finance and Home Affairs several times. Pinarayi Vijayan, who has never shown talent in anything except as a party-delegated legislator and a state minister, who has never done a single job in his life, is nothing compared to Chidambaram, when you look at it that way. That is one reason for that protection of one and the condemnation of the other.

Pinarayi Vijayan is a person who has not written a single article of his own in his forty years of public life, other than sitting down bent over and reading the speeches written by others for him. Chidambaram is the author of the best books, Fearless in Opposition, Standing Guard, Speaking Truth to Power, Undaunted, and A View from the Outside, which are recognized in India and abroad. Not ever have anyone heard that Pinarayi Vijayan, his parents, his wife, his son or his daughter have made any mark or created any movement in the country's intellectual circles or contributed directly to the country's economic growth. Not that it has not been heard, it has not been done. He was also the one who proved before the world that the graduates of Talasseri Brannan College cannot speak English.

It was Chidambaram's maternal grandfather Annamalai Chettiar who was a banker who founded the Annamalai University and United India Insurance Company. It was his brother Ramaswamy Chettiar started the Indian Overseas Bank and the Indian Bank which were known as Chettiar Bank until recently in Madras. P. Chidambaram was the leader of the labor union at the Madras Rubber Factory- MRF. He took MBA from Harvard in 1968. Turning a left-wing thinker he joined forces with the famous editor of The Hindu Mr. N. Ram in 1969 to publish the journal Radical Review. He has worked as Finance Minister and Home Minister under three Prime Ministers namely Rajiv Gandhi, Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh.

Chidambaram wrote and presented the 1997 budget which was the best budget in India. His wife, Nalini Chidambaram, is the daughter of a Supreme Court Justice and a Tamil poetess and author Soundara Kailash, who is also a Supreme Court advocate. Facing allegations that his certificates for BA were fake which helped him get his MA, that too the proof of which were released as documents by BJP leaders such as Subramaniam Swamy and Amit Shah themselves, there are plenty of reasons like these for Narendra Modi for Pinarayi Vijayan becoming endeared to him and Chidambaram becoming his enemy, and for protecting Pinarayi Vijayan and hunting P. Chidambaram.

It was through a campaign designed and carried out through the media that it is an invincible movement that cannot be defeated and destroyed by anyone anyway that the BJP has been holding on until now. But after their coming for the second time in power in 2019, in the assembly elections in many states including Punjab in 2021 and Karnataka in 2023, and in the Local Body elections held in July 2023 in West Bengal, people saw the BJP breaking up. This break up still continues. The whole of the south went out of their grab.

In all these states, the BJP failed to get even 10 votes in many polling booths. The present situation of BJP is that there is no rank and file to work for them in the villages of the country except the leaders who left their parties and joined BJP for one reason or another or for the only reason of BJP being in power. The truth is that none of their followers had switched sides with these defectors. The BJP's existing ranks were not willing and ready to accept and work with these traitors of their parties- they still are, because these new joiners had been anti-BJP still then, were against these workers, were their proclaimed enemies, and had been vehemently campaigning against them. How do you forget the long-term enmity that you had against one until then and suddenly reconcile by one day? So it became a party of leaders only. If you ask which the Party of Leaders in India is today, you can undoubtedly say it is the Bharatiya Janata Party. That many leaders have left their parties and joined the BJP since they got power. Except the members and the leaders of the old Jana Samgh, was there anyone in the BJP when it started?

Like any caste and community-based party, the BJP's course too is that it makes a big breakthrough in the beginning and seizes power, and then gradually weakens and disappears from the body of the nation. Now in 2023, just nine years after their coming to power, no one believes what BJP says. People also believe that they are just liars like the Marxist government in Kerala which they adopted recently as a tenant and dependent party. If theirs was a democratic government, India would not have had so many problems and BJP would not have had this much damages and destruction.

India’s EVMs help only the Bharatiya Janatha Party and their Hindu Theo-Corporatocracy!

Recent electoral experiences in India proved that India’s EVMs help only the Bharatiya Janatha Party and its Hindu Theo Corporatocracy. It’s now proved beyond doubt that without electronic voting machines there would have been no BJP victories and BJP governments. Now the Election Commission of India becomes angry whenever and wherever people and political parties demand re-introduction of ballot papers in stead. Why should they become angry when people demand an electoral process which they feel have served them well through decades?

This article was written on 21 May 2019 when India was going through a Parliament election and waited five years before publishing to see if the allegations against the BJP of manipulating electronic voting machines for victory would be disproved which it was not. Every election since then- from State Assembly Elections to the local Self-Government Body elections only proved that the centre-ruling Bharatiya Janata Party is more widely using EVM manipulations for election victories and also allowing this concession to be used by their Hindu Raashtra Allies like the Marxist Party in states like Kerala.

Even though the electoral process and the democracy in India is older than any but those in the USA, it is still not even considered a full democracy like Norway, Iceland, Sweden, New Zealand, Denmark, Canada, Ireland, Australia, Switzerland and Finland.

Why is India not included anywhere in this list of nineteen countries considered and accepted as with a full democracy? Other that the rigged electoral processes and accompanying corruption, what prevented India from emerging as a country with full democracy?
