The Fourth Estate betrayed people’s wish for paper ballot in India

Had the Fourth Estate, i.e., the newspapers and the television media of India, been true and committed to people and served their purpose, replacing paper ballot with suspect electronic voting machines would not have been possible in India. The people would have been made alert enough to recognize the dangers they pose. If people do not vote, whose vote will the voting machines manipulate? That was the remedy but the Fourth Estate skillfully prevented this from happening. They were always after government advertisements and concessions. So they turned their faces away from the obvious. So the people got a government which is now being accused of formed by rigging elections through networks masterminding electronic voting machines.

Now the Fifth Estate, i.e., the people, recognized this betrayal by the Fourth Estate and is independently raising this issue of bringing back ballot papers. It is people, and not companies, organizations or political parties, who are writing directly in social media like Face Book, Twitter and Linked In demanding the reinstatement of ballot paper. They have begun to speak directly, without the help of the Fourth Estate. Till this parliament election in India in 2019, we did not see this much posts, articles and news demanding the reinstatement of ballot paper. Isn’t it the rise of people against voting machines? If it isn’t the rise of people, then what is?

Of a hundred people who express and record their opinions and views in Face Book and other social media, how many write in support of voting machines and how many demand the bringing back of ballot papers? See the difference in the educational and social awareness levels of these people who are in favour and who are against voting machines, and also see the language each uses. It’s self explanatory. The Fifth Estate is expressing their opinions independent of the untrustworthy newspapers and television media and becoming powerful each day, with each issue, sending their message to more people, however hard the print and visual media try to reverse this trend. People do not need the betraying Fourth Estate of India anymore to express their opinions. They have other more efficient platforms.

People are absolutely right in using the name EVM Government in India. If the government considers it as a shame, they are perfectly free to remove all EVMs from the country. Or they can even remove themselves from the government. And if they believe EVMs are perfectly legitimate, then what is the shame in being called an EVM Government?

Political parties, newspapers and television channels have no place in deciding whether voting machines are to be retained or removed because they never contributed to either initiating or carrying on this particular discussion. It is people who initiated this discussion in the country in the social media independent of the print and visual media and the politicians and are leading it. Let the discussion proceed in the social media and let people discuss the merits and demerits of ballot papers and electronic or mechanical voting machines.

Article Title Image 3 By Julie Johnson. Graphics: Adobe SP.

There is a ton of literature in internet on this subject, contributed by other countries which introduced or banned electronic voting machines which the people are perfectly free to read. As a result, today, the opponents of voting machines are far better leanrnèd and advanced than the supporters of voting machines and that is why the discussions on this issue go unbalanced. Let people read everything, discuss and tell politicians, media and the government whether they want voting machines to go and ballot papers to be brought back or the electronic voting machines to remain. No political parties, newspapers or television channels asked people to discuss this issue and no one- repeat ‘no one’- has a right to ask people to stop it. Let this discussion proceed in the social media and let people express their firm opinions. Why should a government and its supporters fear a people’s discussion on voting machines if they did not manipulate them to win the elections?

Postal Votes mean State Employees and Army Personnel- indeed a cross section of our society though not a perfect cross section. All service votes went to the ruling party BJP in spite of the opposition parties having the greatest number of government servants in their organizations made the people of India distrust the election processes. Anyway, more and more people have begun to distrust the electronic voting machines after the 2019 Parliament Elections in India and the demand for bringing back Ballot Papers is gaining strength.

Article Title Image 2 By Geralt. Graphics: Adobe SP.

BJP which had been steadily loosing polls in the state assembly elections throughout the country in 2018 securing 350 seats in the 2019 parliament elections made people suspicious of voting machines more than ever. In the coming years the campaign for Bringing Back Ballot Papers is only going to strengthen in India as it is already strengthening throughout the world. Many advanced countries- far advanced than India- are abandoning electronic voting machines for fear of massive manipulations and rigging and replacing them with Ballot Papers as earlier.

Governments want electronic voting machines to remain and people want them to go. We know why. Do not believe in people who shout machines are infallible and cannot be manipulated. They are those people who do not reveal personal details in social media like Face Book, Twitter and Linked In, fearing machines and systems would manipulate and misuse them!

Countries which first introduced electronic voting machines decades before are one by one returning to ballot paper! Countries which introduced electronic voting machines yesterday and day-before-yesterday are celebrating the wonders of electronic voting machines!! Even people who do not know how to say anything about voting machines without using one or two filthy words are staunchly supporting voting machines even without even hearing about the fierce struggle going on in far advanced countries against voting machines. The thing is the supporters of voting machines are now shrinking to authorities and the illiterate and uneducated fools who still remain the basic support base of electronic voting machines.

Article Title Image 2 By Nandhu Kumar. Graphics: Adobe SP.

The BJP and the Election Commission never thought the enmity towards voting machines will become this much fierce and develop this much speedily in India. The most they expected was political parties would resist and file a few cases. They never thought people will take up this matter, superseding political parties. They have begun to recognize that someday the voting machines will have to go and the ballot paper will be brought back by people.

The support for voting machines is becoming very weak in India. It is now becoming limited to among BJP members and supporters and election commission officials. We still do not know even the election commission is unanimous in this matter. News of dissidence inside the commission is still coming out. It has now come to the point of the supporters of voting machines in India no more being able to sell their merchandise. That limited support for these machines outside the retinue of political and bureaucratic supporters of the ruling party too is drying up, like a rivulet emptying into a desert of dry sand. We now know why the support for voting machines is loosing grounds in India. Everyone educated and technically advanced are on the other side.

People have the right to express their wish as to how to cast their votes- through ballot paper, or through electronic voting machines. Irrespective of what the election commission thinks or insists people have that right. Election Commission cannot change people but people can change election commissions and election processes. People may even change electronic voting machines and put ballot paper back in place when their campaigns gains momentum. In quite a number of countries in the world, people have put the ballot paper back and replaced electronic voting machines. In India too they may do exactly that. What is strange in India is it is not the political parties or the government but the president-appointed election commission itself that is insistent upon voting machines, without minding what many other democratic countries are doing.

In the history of election processes in the world, it was governments which demanded the introduction of voting machines in place of ballot paper, not people. People always stood for ballot paper and from verifying media archives we can see that only a very few people stood for voting machines. People are always suspicious of machines, though they do use them. Why do even people who strongly advocate in social media for the continuance of voting machines do not post their personal details or family photos in Face Book? It is because they know they are sure to be manipulated by someone somewhere through machines and misused without their knowledge and authority. That is machine. That is technology. Machines are insensitive and obey only commands.

Which is the country most famous for creating the largest scams in the world? India. Who gives commands to these machines? The officers of the country which holds the world record for scams. Do you think the officers of the election commission are unmarried, single, untouched, virgin young men and girls? They too are susceptible to vices like in any other institutions. Certainly it is not the only institution devoid of all vices in India. Why most people, except of course those who wanted to see BJP winning a sweeping victory, are doubtful about electronic voting machines is because the election commission declined to subject themselves to investigation on almost all of the allegations raised against these machines, including the most grave ones such as discrepancies in purchasing, transporting, paying for, missing and malfunctioning of these machines.

It was not the machines but the attitude of the election commission which germinated the seeds of distrust. They did nothing to establish their transparency and commitment but instead threatened people with prosecution- the very thing symptomatic of non-transparency and went on with alienating more and more people, which is not at all right for a democratically founded institution to do. If they are that unwilling to subject themselves to investigations on their machines and their processes and believe they are exerting their right, why can’t people exert their right to doubt their behaviour and policies and demand investigations?

Article Title Image 2 By Bill Wegener. Graphics: Adobe SP.

Can a democratically founded institution in a country challenge the democratic rights of the people of that country? It is sure something the UN or its branches like the UNCHR or ICJ to decide. Instead of subjecting themselves to investigations to clear all doubts raised on their procurements and policies, the election commission tried to browbeat and terrorize people by threatening all who question election processes and election commission! This only hinted the truth behind the allegations against their machines, in a way actually validated them and forced more people to call for bringing back the ballot paper. Why they become angry and furious at people demanding the bringing back of ballot papers? They have no right to become angry. This country has not yet become a dictatorship or an autocratic theocracy. It is still a democratic country with people’s right to elect a government and install institutions like election commission and watch for dictatorial, autocratic and theocratic trends developing among its institutions. You know, democracy replaced many worst forms of administration and it is only natural for them all to try to make their reappearance. Democracy needs watching, and keeping. In fact, in a democratic country, it is people’s duty to watch for dictatorial, autocratic and theocratic trends reappearing among its institutions and give warnings to others in time before it is too late. It is still not the other way. That was one of the many lessons the people of India were taught by the unilaterally declared national emergency of India in 1975.

If people do not watch and warn these great institutions they created how will they know and hear the footsteps of dictatorship, autocracy and theocracy approaching the planning for which are punishable by death in their democracy anyway? Unless the election commission knows their machines and processes are being manipulated and they themselves are now prone to dictatorial, autocratic and theocratic trends, why should they become angry enough to threaten with incarceration people who raise allegations against them? Isn’t even this anger and threat of arresting and prosecuting people a dictatorial, autocratic and theocratic trend? Even the president is elected by people, though at present through their representatives, and it’s the president who appoints institutions like election commission. So, ultimately, they are all responsible and answerable to people. It seems it is time the president warns them not to go beyond bounds.

The hold of Marxist Party is limited only to a few states in India and their manipulating the elections, if they ever dare do it, will not have any significant impact on the national scene. But BJP, with the backing of RSS and its multi Hinduist organizations, if turn to manipulation of election processes, will have the ability to create a deadly impact on the national scene. It may even end the election and the democratic process in India. If you are old, you are old, and cannot be old and young at the same time. If you want to keep your faith firmly in centuries-old traditions and are doggedly opposing to the transformations happening to society in the modern day world, you cannot be modern and current too at the same time.

Not eating beef is a centuries old Hindu tradition and if you want to retain it in a modern society, you are plainly against a population-increasing world beginning to eat whatever won't be biting back. If you are a politically oriented Hindu and want to ban beef-eating, and if you get the ruling power of India, then you will soon find that you want to install an Emperor, to keep up with ages-old Indian Hindu traditions. (You needn't lust; the Reliance Industries' Chief is already selected to that post!). So, if you want to keep Hindu traditions, you cannot at the same time keep democracy. So, the fear prevalent in India that if the BJP comes to power a third time in India that will be the end of Indian democracy and the beginning of a 1000-year dictatorship like the once dreamed about 1000-Year Reich of Hitler's Germany which the whole world united to crush down is justified.
