Writers needn’t leave social media groups for any reason: the outside world is crueller

If a writer cannot tolerate and endure the opposition, criticism and bullying in a people’s discussion group in social media, how can he or she as a writer tolerate and endure those in the readers' world when one's book comes out? People’s groups in social media are the real testing grounds where we pass or fail. There, there are other writers, and of course publishers, readers and critics- a truly representational cross section of the literary society of today. There, there is representation of all continents and almost all countries. If a writer welcomes criticism, it's today the accepted norm, not a concession on his or her part, to post details of his or her book in a people’s discussion group in social media and receive wholeheartedly the flowers and stones coming his or her way. It’s a far better substitute to the author-initiated or publisher-initiated paid reviews we regularly find in newspapers and literary websites. It's not the other way. Some writers find it hard to just go through these severe comments and advice and eventually leave these groups. My personal advice is one needn't leave these groups for any reason; the outside world is crueller.
