In Punjab and Haryana, Reliance Company’s Jio was the leader in telecom services. After realizing that the three agricultural amendment laws brought by the central government were to give Reliance a monopoly in the agricultural sector, farmers in both states started abandoning Jio connections, and stopped taking new ones. In November 2020, Jio had 1 crore forty lakh subscribers in Punjab, but after the farmers taking this decision, it lost 15 lakh subscribers in one month and in December 2020 the next month, the number of subscribers had fallen to 1 crore twenty five lakh.
In November 2020, in the small state of Haryana which was formed by splitting off from the large state of Punjab as part of political appeasing and curtailing the Khalistan separatists’ growth there, Jio lost five lakh customer people in one month out of the total number of customers of ninety five lakhs which fell to eighty nine lakhs in November 2020 as a result of this Farmers’ Strike.
It was after receiving leaked information that through the aggressive New Delhi’s moves Reliance intended to acquire ownership of all agricultural produce in the country and seize agricultural land that the workers resorted to drastic measures not only to boycott Reliance connections but also to destroy Reliance Towers during the Farmers’ Strike.
